Osor beyond the myth

December 2024: The Roman surveying of Osor territories was dated

The Roman land survey, often referred to as centuriatio, was a surveying system that divided territories into square grids of uniform size, such as 710 x 710 metres, known as centuriae. First and foremost, land surveying was a visible sign of Roman occupation of conquered territory, closely followed by legal and fiscal laws. A systematic analysis of LiDAR data covering the Kvarner Islands has resulted in the discovery of surveying remains on the islands of Cres and Krk (Doneus et al. 2024). An absolute chronology for the surveying of the Osor territory was established using the optically stimulated luminescence profiling and dating (OSL-PD) method, providing a date range of 200+100 AD. These results can be considered the first clear evidence of the surveying municipal land on the Croatian islands.

The LiDAR data from the Punta Križa Peninsula, south of Osor, shows evidence of Roman surveying.
